Marching Band

The "Pride of Cougar Country", the Westland High School Marching Band has consistently represented the South-Western City School district with distinction for the past 50 years. The band has performed around the nation and consistently receives high ratings and reviews. The marching band performs at football games, parades, competitions and community performances.

Marching band is a co-curricular ensemble that is open to student’s grade 9-12. The season begins in late April with new member clinics for incoming 9th graders and new students and will end in the first week in November. Students enrolled in concert band are required to participate in marching band unless they participate in a fall school sport (football, girls volleyball, girls tennis, cross country, fall cheerleading, golf). The Color Guard is an essential part of the marching band and is open to all interested students. Participation in Color Guard is based on an annual audition that takes place in the spring. Color guard students are not required to play a musical instrument or participate in any instrumental ensembles.

The Westland High School Marching Band competes in Ohio Music Education Association, Mid-States Band Association, and Bands of America circuits. The marching band has also taken trips around the country, most recently their trip to Disney World where they participated in the Magic Kingdom parade. There they march through the park and right down Main Street USA where they are greeted by thousands of cheering spectators.  The students also may participate in a workshop with Disney musicians where they get to experience what it is like to be a professional musician and actually go through the rehearsal and recording process for creating the music for a Disney movie soundtrack.

Tryouts for percussion and color Guard are held in April and May and are open to ALL 8th graders and High School Students.

It is recommended that family vacations for marching band members be planned for late June to mid July.  All band participants must be in attendance for all rehearsals from band camp through the completion of marching season.

Additional fees are required for this activity.
