Indoor Drumline & Guard

Winter Guard 2018.jpg

The art and activity of color guard and winter guard is one that combines quality music with an effective visual presentation. The WHS Color Guard's goal is to provide our students and audiences with both a highly competitive, yet equally entertaining marching band and winter guard show through consistent and positive instruction. Our members are students who are enthusiastic and have a desire to learn and be a part of a growing and competitive group at the high school. As one team of instructors, students and parents, we work together to achieve the goals the students and staff have set for the season.

Although color guard is considered a visual art form, it is also a physically demanding activity and is commonly referred to as the "Sport of the Arts." Color guard and winter guard members

rehearse 6-20 hours per week and participate in weekly conditioning so they can increase their strength, stamina and performance level.

Winter Guard is an extracurricular indoor Color Guard that competes in the OIPA and MEPA circuits. This guard consists of grade 8-12 students feed into Westland High school from Norton Middle School, and Pleasant View Middle School.  The Group is made up of Fall Guard members who wish to improve movement and guard equipment skills. Those who are not involved in color guard are welcomed to audition and participate in the winter guard season.   Auditions begin in November and the season concludes in April.

The indoor percussion is a 25-40 member, extra-curricular, competitive percussion ensemble. Students combine elements of music performance, marching, and theater and perform advanced percussion arrangements in coordination with choreographed drill on a customized floor covering. They compete in the OIPA and MEPA circuit. The Percussion ensemble is primarily open to percussionists in the band program, but also includes other students with advanced musical experience. This ensemble only comprises of Westland High School students in grades 9-12. Auditions begin in November and the season will conclude in April.
