Westland High School Marching Band

Dear Parents and Students of the Westland Marching Band,

I hope this letter finds you well rested and in good spirits. Despite all of the uncertainties we have faced in the past six months, I am eager to share good news! For the fall of 2009 our show will be Cirque du Soleil: Journey of Man. However, this is contingent on passing Issue 2 on August 4.

A very important meeting is taking place on Tuesday, July 28 at 6:30pm. The meeting will be held at the Columbia Heights United Methodist Church at 775 Galloway Rd (south of Westland High School). During the meeting district officials will be providing information about resuming activities if the levy passes on August 4. We will also be given time to meet as the marching band to address questions and provide clarification where needed. We need to have all band and color guard students in attendance or represented at the meeting.

Throughout the next few weeks please visit the official band website at www.westlandbandboosters.com and the official Westland High School Marching Band group on Facebook (this group is hosted by Julie Siler-Prater). If your student has their own Facebook account, please consider allowing your child to become a part of this group to ease communication within the Westland Band. For your child’s safety the group is closed so students must submit an interest and be approved by Julie or myself before being allowed to participate.

Included in this mailing is a calendar of events (that will go into effect on August 5, pending a majority “Yes” vote on election day), some Frequently Asked Questions, and fee information. I have also included information about how our organization will function if the levy does not succeed in passage. You will find most of that information on the FAQs sheet.

After many, many weeks of waiting, please join me in welcoming Mr. Zachary Koehler as our new Assistant Band Director! Mr. Koehler is a familiar face with the Westland Band family due to volunteering his time to work with our students. Last year Mr. Koehler taught at Pleasant View Middle School and Park Street Intermediate. In addition to Mr. Koehler, this season’s staff includes Barry Canan (drill writer and visual consultant), Brandon Wright (guard instructor) and Austin Nill (percussionist recommended by Tim Jackson).

On Friday July 31 the Band Boosters have organized a Pool Party at the Madison County Pool (in West Jefferson) from 8-10pm. This will be a great chance to let everyone catch up, swim, dance and eat (concessions will be available). I look forward to seeing you all there!
