Freshman Welcome Page
My Freshman Year
As a freshman band parent I was unsure of what to expect, where I could help, how
much time would be required and most of all how much would it cost. I wanted to
be involved but wasn’t sure who to ask or where to find information. As the year
went by I found that not only other freshman parents but also parents of upper classmen
felt the same.
This page is being provided to answer your questions and give you information about
who we are; what we do; where/why parents and students can help; how much time is
involved and costs that are involved.
The band boosters are simply band parents who want to be involved. There is an executive
board which is elected annually and chairpersons for various committees.
The Directors, Squad Leaders, Members, Boosters, and Parents of the award-winning
Westland High School Marching Band and Color Guard would like to welcome you to
the 2008-2009 season. We want your experience with us to be valuable, rewarding
and satisfying. We will make every effort to keep you informed of the opportunities
and expectations that are associated with participation in the band and guard. We
greatly appreciate the effort, expense, and time your student and yourself will
need to contribute to participate in this rich and rewarding experience. Your schedule
of events will begin in May and continue through out the year.
This is the 1st of many communications you will receive from us. In short, this
document will outline a fee and due date schedule for the expenses associated with
band and guard participation. A contact list for the current Band Booster Committee
Chairs. The responsibilities associated with your much-needed and much-appreciated
participation on one or more of these committees essential to the success of the
band and guard. Also, a brief description of the wide variety of interesting fund
raising opportunities that our booster volunteers have created for you through the
years to ensure that every student has an opportunity to enjoy the truly outstanding
accomplishment of participation with the band and guard.
You may be wondering as you look through the following document are these fees necessary,
are all these committees necessary, and are all these fund raising opportunities
necessary? The answer is yes they are, we need and greatly value your help. The
Westland High School Marching Band and Color Guard is an organization of over 100
members who require leadership, transportation to events, uniforms, music, training,
choreography, scripting, band camp, not to mention meals, snacks, commitment, dedication,
and participation by both your student and yourself. Make no mistake that every
participant wants to have fun, but also to field the highest quality band and guard
that we can achieve. Band parents and band boosters will have a huge impact on the
success of our band and guard. We invite you to make a commitment now of a small
or hopefully large amount of your valuable time to help our band and guard be the
very best they can become.
Booster meetings are held the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30pm in the music wing.
